A Cognitive Approach to Medieval Mode: Evidence for an Historical Antecedent to the Major/Minor System

چکیده
A random sample of 98 Gregorian chants was used to assemble “mode profiles”—pitch-class distributions for each of eight medieval modes in the manner of Krumhansl’s and Kessler’s (1982) key profiles. These profiles are shown to be useful in predicting the conventional modal designation for individual chants. An analysis of the eight mode profiles suggests that modes 3, 5 and 8 (Phrygian, Lydian and Hypomixolydian) are highly similar and can be distinguished from a more heterogeneous group consisting of the remaining modes. A cluster analysis of profiles for individual chants gives further evidence that these three modes form a supramodal category. The results are shown to be consistent with a theory of mode offered by the 11th-century writer, Johannes Cotto, who proposed that the tenor pitch is important in classifying modes. It is suggested that an observed polarization of the eight modes into two broad groups may have provided a cognitive kernel that facilitated the emergence of the major/minor system in the 17th century. Gairdner’s medieval approach to characterization of prophet of Islam
In this research, the Gairdner’s new strategy in characterization of Prophet of Islam is being explored. The research question is how a biased approach to description of Prophet of Islam, despite its scientific and academic appearance, has presented a distorted account of the Prophet’s life. The ideas produced by this approach don’t aim to show features of Islam and its prophet to the west, but...
متن کاملAn LPV Approach to Sensor Fault Diagnosis of Robotic Arm
One of the major challenges in robotic arms is to diagnosis sensor fault. To address this challenge, this paper presents an LPV approach. Initially, the dynamics of a two-link manipulator is modelled with a polytopic linear parameter varying structure and then by using a descriptor system approach and a robust design of a suitable unknown input observer by means of pole placement method along w...
متن کاملTrajectory tracking of under-actuated nonlinear dynamic robots: Adaptive fuzzy hierarchical terminal sliding-mode control
In recent years, underactuated nonlinear dynamic systems trajectory tracking, such as space robots and manipulators with structural flexibility, has become a major field of interest due to the complexity and high computational load of these systems. Hierarchical sliding mode control has been investigated recently for these systems; however, the instability phenomena will possibly occur, especia...
متن کاملPromoting Corporate Image: A Reflection on Green Supply Chain Management Approach
Corporate image is an important organizational resource that enables to create, strengthen and sustain competitive advantage. Different antecedents have been identified for corporate image in the literature including quality of products and services, consumer consideration or distribution system. Green supply chain management appears to be an antecedent of corporate image too. This study examin...
متن کاملSpectrum Assignment in Cognitive Radio Networks Using Fuzzy Logic Empowered Ants
The prevalent communications networks suffer from lack of spectrum and spectrum inefficiency. This has motivated researchers to develop cognitive radio (CR) as a smart and dynamic radio access promised solution. A major challenge to this new technology is how to make fair assignment of available spectrum to unlicensed users, particularly for smart grids communication. This paper introduces an i...
